Cutting-edge planetarium development
Sherwood Observatory
Pick Everard delivered a state-of-the-art planetarium, merging cutting-edge technology with innovative design to provide an immersive educational and entertainment experience. The project is set to redefine the visitor experience and inspire learning about the universe.
This is going to be a cutting-edge facility and it has been fascinating to work on. We are now moving to the next stage where a specialist planetarium creator is on site transforming the dome.

Our approach
Funded by the UK Government, the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the Garfield Weston Foundation, Wolfson Foundation, the Foyle Foundation and numerous other donors, the new planetarium forms part of the Sherwood Observatory, which has been transformed into a leading regional education and exhibition space on Coxmoor Road in Sutton-in-Ashfield.
The scheme comprised of the transformation of a disused underground Victorian reservoir into an education centre for school and group visits. The development breathes new life into the historic building, which feature an exhibition hall, classrooms, a café, and meeting rooms, as well as the state-of-the-art planetarium.
The building incorporates sustainable materials and energy-efficient systems to minimise its carbon footprint, aligning with the client's commitment to environmental responsibility. It was designed to meet the highest accessibility standards, ensuring inclusivity for all visitors, including step-free access and assistive technologies.
Pick Everard provided project and cost management, collaborating with the client and contractor to ensured the project was delivered on time and within budget.
The new planetarium design incorporates the existing Victorian subterranean reservoir, which will see its original features, such as the intricate brick arches, kept to preserve the history of the building.
The ambitious plans for the site aim to create a unique, world-class facility that will rival those elsewhere in the UK.
The planetarium sets a new standard in immersive educational spaces, attracting visitors of all ages and interests. The development supports the local economy by boosting tourism and creating job opportunities.
As a whole the social value that this project will add to the community is significant, inspiring STEM learning, growing future skills, and bringing prosperity through the new science discovery centre.
