The Challenge
One of the main challenges was converting an ageing retail unit—originally built in 1877—into a modern clinical facility that met strict NHS Blood and Transplant standards. Structural limitations of the existing building required careful coordination to integrate new services and layouts without compromising integrity. The confined urban site and high street location also presented logistical challenges, particularly around deliveries and minimising disruption to neighbouring businesses. Additionally, stakeholder engagement was crucial, balancing clinical needs with community expectations, including the integration of local artwork and cultural references to ensure the centre felt welcoming, inclusive, and reflective of its surroundings.
Our Solution
Pick Everard’s expertise in project management and contract administration, delivered through the SCAPE Consultancy Framework, was key to the project’s success. Close collaboration with NHS Blood and Transplant, Carmelcrest Construction, and local stakeholders ensured the scheme met clinical requirements while also delivering a welcoming, community-focused environment. Our proactive coordination helped navigate structural challenges and maintain programme and budget. Regular engagement sessions enabled swift resolution of issues and aligned the design with stakeholder needs. The result is a high-quality, accessible facility that supports NHS objectives, enhances community health, and has been recognised for its collaborative impact through industry award nominations.

Project Highlights
The adaptive reuse of a disused retail unit minimised embodied carbon compared to a new-build alternative, supporting NHS sustainability goals. The internal layout was carefully designed to maximise space efficiency while enhancing patient and staff experience, with features such as integrated artwork and a 'hero wall' to promote engagement and wellbeing. Modern MEP systems were sensitively integrated into the historic fabric of the building, improving energy performance while preserving structural integrity. The inclusive design also reflected local culture, ensuring the space was welcoming, accessible, and tailored to its diverse community.
