Construction progresses on Pedestrian and Cyclist Bridge
19 Jun 2025
Significant progress has been made on the construction of the multi-million-pound pedestrian and cyclist bridge over the River Trent in Nottingham.
Once complete, the 85-metre-long Waterside Bridge will offer a vital new link across the river, encouraging active travel and improving connectivity between neighbourhoods on either side of the Trent.
The bridge is currently taking shape in Hucknall, where large prefabricated steel sections are being fabricated by Briton Fabricators Ltd. Once fully assembled, the steel superstructure will be dismantled into six parts and transported to a specialist painting facility later this summer.
The bridge will then be assembled on-site on the banks of the River Trent, thoroughly safety tested, and lifted into place in November using one of the largest cranes in the world.
The multi-disciplinary Pick Everard team is providing project and cost management, and health and safety services for the scheme, operating under Perfect Circle and appointed through the SCAPE Consultancy Framework. Balfour Beatty is leading as the main project partner.
The new bridge is entirely funded by the Transforming Cities Fund, provided by Central Government. The bridge will be the flagship, and final project to come out of the City Council’s Transforming Cities Fund programme, which began in 2020 following a successful joint bid between Nottingham and Derby for over £160million of central Government funding for projects which encourage inter-city connectivity and lower carbon journeys.
“It’s wonderful to close our government-funded Transforming Cities programme of local active travel and infrastructure improvements with such a flagship project which will have a big impact on our city.
We’re already seeing local people getting excited about the new bridge as it appeared on the horizon at Briton in Hucknall, and it’s so special to have Nottingham people involved in every step from planning and designing to building and installing.”
— Cllr Linda Woodings, Executive Member for Regional Development, Growth and Transport at Nottingham City Council
“It was great to come together with the wider project team and Nottingham City Council to see the impressive progress being made on the Waterside Bridge. Reaching this milestone, with the main arch and bridge deck now fabricated along with its supporting temporary works, is a fantastic achievement for everyone involved. The next step will see the structure move on for painting, bringing us even closer to the bridge’s completion.”
— Ricky Lee, associate director of project management at Pick Everard
“We are extremely proud to be building this iconic structure for our home town, and very pleased that it has allowed us to showcase the technical skill and ability of our employees in 3D modelling and engineering, accuracy in setting out, controlled fabrication procedures and practices to a very high execution class, as well as installation and erection once on site.
This is really a success story of Local Government spend, and the benefits in social value being received and achieved within the local community and its support to this local business.”
— Dean Morcom, Managing Director at Briton Fabricators Ltd
Once complete, the Waterside Bridge will form a key part of Nottingham’s active travel network, and boost inner city connectivity.
