Development of a high-quality new care home and extra care accommodation in a challenging remote island location
Goathill Farm Care Home and Extra Care
To address a projected shortfall in suitable residential care and extra care accommodation in Stornoway, both in the near and longer terms, this project will create a 52-bed residential care home run by Western Isles Council and a 50-bed extra care run by Hebridean Housing Partnership. Once complete the facility will provide accommodation to meet a range of care needs and levels of dependency among elderly members of the population.
Our approach
Created with input from dementia services design experts at the University of Stirling to optimise proposed staffing and operating models, the care home is a single-storey with four wings each accommodating 13 residents along with wandering loops, central communal activity area and safe garden courts included. The extra care housing is a two-storey building over three levels to account for the sloping site topography.
Limited options for energy supply was identified as a major risk, requiring early engagement with utilities companies and an energy modelling exercise to identify viable options including renewable technologies to reduce energy costs in operation.
Our foul drainage strategy was to avoid the inclusion of a new pumping station and instead connect into one already in the vicinity by including a new sewer. This required negotiation and agreement with Scottish Water.
