Group People and Culture Director

Our commitment to our people forms a central and integral part of our business strategy. We know that our employees are our most important asset, and our dream goal is to provide inspiring careers for exceptional people. Elizabeth Hardwick-Smith, group people and culture director, gives more insight into what we do to help staff reach their potential and goals, and how we are driving to be a force of positive change in the industry in terms of diverse recruitment and inspiring the next generation.

Deliver Better Together

Our vision for our employees is to create a positive and passionate culture that motivates and drives us all to be the very best we can be. We know that the catalyst for our ambitious business objectives will be achieved through the empowerment of our people and will continue to provide all of the opportunities our people want and need to achieve their goals.

Every day of our work is guided by our central values – Being Professional, Being Compassionate, Being Driven, and Being Positive. These principles guide us in everything we do, pushing us to collectively deliver better together for clients, and for each other.

Continually creating better

Career development is central to our excellence, which is why we have a wide range of support mechanisms available for our people. This is done with an emphasis on choice and guidance to help people choose their own paths and work towards their dream goals when it comes to their careers.

Existing employees and new joiners are able to access all of this support through our People Hub, as well as traditional pathways through line managers and mentors. Driven to innovate this offering during the pandemic, there is now more career development choice than ever before including coaching, mentoring, professional development planning, our viewpoints programme, online social learning networking, e-learning, virtual sessions, and organised programmes.

Established high-quality industry recognised training programmes are available, using blended learning for apprentices and graduates so they can develop business awareness and core soft skills aligned to our home grown competency framework, alongside technical expertise. 40 per cent of our employees are currently undertaking higher or professional education, supported by our teams, and perfectly positioning them to action our mission of ‘deliver better together’.

Our RISE mentoring programme matches in-house mentors to mentees through an understanding of strengths and where cross-discipline expertise can be shared. This helps with our key focus of increasing the integration and collaboration between our disciplines, born out of strengthening internal relations between our people.

As well as the career options, our employees have full opportunity to get involved with activities outside of the workplace that leave a positive impact and benefit local communities.

Recently, our employees have completed community projects including the regeneration of an allotment in Market Harborough used by local community groups, and volunteering to decorate and furnish a new residential building for use by the charity Nightsafe, which supports young homeless people.

Pushing forward a more diverse world

Pushing for better is a top priority for us, and this is driven by our culture of togetherness. Greater diversity, inclusion and belonging strengthens our talent density and builds a culture where difference and individuality is valued. In short, we provide the right environment for people to be their authentic selves and to challenge us when behaviours, education or practices need addressing.

The construction industry is known for having issues with diversity, and we’re proud that we have above average rates in diversity trends when compared to the wider industry. We continue to drive further positive change through our 13-point diversity and equity plan, which is central to our people strategy.

We are proud to be a true meritocracy, only recruiting and managing talent on the basis of competence and performance regardless of age, ethnicity, gender or cultural background. Our people scorecard, which measures diversity across our people operations, shows that almost half of those being mentored within the business and 40 per cent of senior promotions in the past year have been female.

Increasing diversity within the industry will only be achieved if we make sure it is an attractive and realistic job prospect for all. We take our role in championing the industry very seriously, with more than 10 per cent of our people are STEM ambassadors, spending time with school pupils and promoting the industry and Pick Everard as a diverse place to work.

We are proud of our high level of staff retention, but we want to go further. We want to be the employer of choice in the industry, attracting the very best talent for all disciplines.

We’re a growing team and have a range of national opportunities offering career progression and high job satisfaction. Explore our vacancies here.
