Creation of a solar photovoltaic canopy for Tewkesbury Borough Council

Solar PV Canopy

Tewkesbury Borough Council wanted to create a solar photovoltaic (PV) canopy in the staff car park at the rear of the Public Services Centre.

Pick Everard managed the delivery of this project which involved the installation of 574 solar panels, generating up to 260,000kWh of renewable electricity each year, which can be used by both the council buildings and the leisure centre.

The project has also included a new LED car park lighting and a sustainable drainage planter.

The project was extremely time sensitive with completion required by June 2022 to comply with the agreement made with project funder, Salix.

To ensure that the project deadline was met, regular site meetings were held with the contractor (Polysolar) and Pick Everard to monitor and review progress against the agreed programme.

Part of the negations with Polysolar prior to appointing them as contractor was to advise the client to agree to early order of the PV panels and structural steelwork to ring fence the stock to ensure delivery was secured to meet the programme.

The works were taking place in the middle of an existing car park which needed to remain open during the construction process.

Under our management, the project was completed on time and within budget.

To enable works to proceed smoothly within the constraints of an operational car park, we incorporated a one-way system and used Heras fencing to separate the site to the open car park.

The scheme will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 76 tonnes a year, and save around £45,000 a year in energy costs, helping Tewkesbury Borough Council become carbon neutral by 2030.
