Blending heritage with modern branding in a dynamic urban setting

Lane Ten Café Bar

The interior design team developed a concept to repurpose a previously unused industrial structure into a sophisticated café bar. Blending its historic roots with contemporary branding, the space is accentuated by timber plaques showcasing beverages, embodying both inclusivity and brand distinction.

The Interiors team were asked to provide a concept for a café bar that needed to be appropriate for both day and evening use. It was important that an atmospheric design be proposed for a currently disused industrial building in the heart of a small town. The space needed to be memorable, welcoming, inclusive to all and help develop the Lane Ten Café Bars brand. As such, the team were asked to go a step further and provide designs for signage (branding). In response to this, the team proposed timber plaques above the bar which graphically depict the different types of drinks available, using industrial materials to tie the branding back to the building’s heritage.

The challenge presented was to take a disused building and create a welcoming, eclectic space that encouraged custom and provided a unique brand. The proposed site for the café bar was a disused industrial building. The site was a ‘blank canvas’ but provided a unique concept for the café. The existing and original windows inspired the team to embrace the building’s fabric and repeat the cubic form of the window glazing bars throughout the scheme. This can be seen in the low-level partitions with bespoke timber toppers, through the botanical trellis style feature above the counter and the structured pattern of the ceiling which has been used to carefully integrate lighting.

The use of materials played a vital part in bringing the scheme together. From the painted timber wall panelling to the terrazzo counter front. All of the materials were carefully selected in an attempt to portray an eclectic mix, while also tying the scheme together as a whole. The client’s interest in botanical elements inspired the team to introduce planting and oversized botanical themed prints into the scheme. These prints serve as an eye-catching feature whilst also helping to zone areas of the space. Retaining the existing windows, exposed brick and concrete elements also helped to form a scheme that respects the existing structure of the building.
