Designs for a pumping station refurbishment to provide increased capacity within Jersey’s sewage treatment infrastructure
First Tower Pumping Station
The First Tower pumping station, located on the seafront in St Helier, takes sewage from both the east and the west of Jersey before transferring it to the island’s major sewage treatment works, Bellozanne STW, for treatment.As part of a major refurbishment of the island sewage treatment infrastructure to provide increased capacity for the growing population on the island, we designed the refurbishment of First Tower Pumping Station to provide new equipment, including pumps and pipework.
Our approach
Being the main pumping station for Jersey, including for its capital St Helier, the station could not be taken off-line to complete the refurbishment work. Keeping the station operational to pump sewage for treatment and to prevent any unforeseen events that might impact the local environment meant that work needed to be undertaken in two sections, with careful planning and co-ordination essential.
The existing valve chamber was surveyed and a 3D scan undertaken. By importing this scan into Revit, we developed a full 3D model. This was then used to design a pipework layout.
By using appropriate Revit families for pipe fittings, a detailed layout was developed showing exact sizes for non-standard fittings and also lengths for cut pipes. This enabled the pumping station pipework to be fitted right first time and allowed a swift changeover without loss of station operation.
