A brand-new specialist school for SEMH

Bowman Academy

Bowman Academy was designed as a purpose-built SEND facility, prioritising accessibility and inclusivity. The school accommodates 64 pupils, with 16 primary-aged children in two ground-floor classrooms and 48 secondary-aged pupils across six classrooms—four on the ground floor and two on the first floor. An additional three first-floor classrooms support practical learning.

The building of Bowman Academy part of a wider program to ensure provision is available to children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities in Leicestershire, as close to their homes as possible.

Designed to meet the needs of SEMH pupils, the school integrates Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) for safety, efficiency, and future adaptability. Collaboration with educators and stakeholders ensured a design that fully supports student wellbeing and learning needs.

Sustainability was central, with MMC significantly reducing material waste and carbon emissions. Off-site manufacturing minimised environmental impact, decreasing transportation needs and on-site construction time. Precision engineering improved energy efficiency, with optimised insulation, PV panels, and MVHR systems reducing operational energy use. Durable materials extend the building’s lifecycle, ensuring long-term sustainability.

The architecture fosters a calm and engaging learning environment, reflecting local materials and incorporating pre-clad offsite installation. The contemporary, vibrant design instils pride in students and the wider community while ensuring functionality and inclusivity.

MMC innovation, including off-site manufacturing and modular construction, allowed for rapid delivery with exceptional precision, enhancing build quality and sustainability. The design also includes sensory-friendly spaces and tailored acoustic solutions to support SEND requirements.

Collaboration with the supply chain was key, ensuring quality, efficiency, and SEND compliance. Strong partnerships enabled seamless integration of off-site and on-site activities.

The local community has embraced Bowman Academy, recognising its vital role in supporting pupils with additional needs. Cllr Deborah Taylor, Cabinet Member for Children and Families at Leicestershire County Council, said: “It is exciting to see the school completed and we’re looking forward to it opening and welcoming new pupils. The building of Bowman Academy part of a wider program to ensure provision is available to children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities in Leicestershire, as close to their homes as possible.”
