Salix Finance has announced the next phase of the Low Carbon Skills Fund, offering a £16 million grant to support decarbonisation consultancy services. Andy Thompson, senior energy consultant, discusses the what this means for public sector organisations.

Salix Finance's Phase 5 Low Carbon Skills Fund announcement presents a vital opportunity for public sector organisations aiming to advance their decarbonisation strategies.

Starting 17 April 2024 at 2pm, the application portal will be open until 1 May 2024. At Pick Everard, we're here to support our public sector clients with a comprehensive suite of services including sustainability and energy, building services engineering, cost management and property and asset advisory.

Here are five critical aspects to consider:

  1. Grant value range system: This new system ensures that funds are distributed more equitably among applicants, addressing previous concerns about fund allocation fairness.
  2. Randomised application assessment: Unlike prior phases where applications were assessed on a first-come, first-served basis, this round introduces a randomized order post-closure, ensuring a fairer review process.
  3. Revised eligibility criteria: The fund has updated its eligibility requirements, including specific conditions like the necessity for an end-of-life heating system in certain grant applications, ensuring that funding is directed where it's most needed.
  4. Focus on heat decarbonisation: The emphasis is on developing comprehensive heat decarbonisation plans, encouraging applicants to adopt a holistic approach to sustainability.
  5. Incorporation of feedback: Salix Finance has adapted its approach based on insights gained from previous phases, demonstrating a commitment to continuous improvement and responsiveness to participant feedback.

For organisations looking to apply, these changes signify a more balanced and considered approach to funding allocation, encouraging a thorough and strategic perspective on decarbonization efforts. For more details, visit Salix Finance's official announcement page.
