Last week I was invited to be part of the Diana Award mentor scheme and present as part of their online work experience week, which helped young people start to answer that important question: “What do you want to be when you grow up?”.

This was just one of many workshops offered as part of the Diana Award online work experience week. It was great that a variety of other sectors and industries were also involved such as the NHS, marketing and law.

These sessions also helped the students develop their soft skills such as preparing for interviews and creating a professional LinkedIn profile. It was fantastic to hear how the mentors can help support the students’ development and progression into the world of work.

During my presentation I focused on these soft skills and my journey into the world of Project Management within the construction industry, as these steppingstones are often missed or not widely available to young people.

It was really uplifting to be able to help the students prepare to take the steps to make their aspirations a reality. I thoroughly enjoyed discussing my journey and I hope that these sessions will help open up their career ambitions to a world of possibilities.

Mentoring and role models are both incredibly important at every level, as they provide the skills, knowledge, and experience to enable us to take the next step and achieve our goals. Schemes like the Diana Award mentoring programmes have the power to inspire the next generation to unlock their future.
