Being Pick Everard
National Apprenticeship Week 2025 - Tilly Ives
14 Feb 2025
During National Apprenticeship Week, Tilly Ives, Assistant Civil Engineer, shares her experience as an apprentice at Pick Everard, reflecting on how the programme has helped her grow both professionally and personally.
What drew you to Pick Everard for your apprenticeship?
When I was first searching for apprenticeships, I wanted to make sure that the company I’d work for would make me feel valued, despite being at a very junior role. Pick Everard was recommended to me by my career’s advisor, and after a look over their website and reading the business values, I knew that it was a company that I’d want to work for.
How has your apprenticeship helped you to grow professionally and personally?
I’ve only been an apprentice with Pick Everard for a few months, but I’ve noticed a big change in myself. I’ve always been quiet, and have often struggled to make conversation with people, but since I’ve been working here, I’ve noticed that I’ve grown massively in confidence both at work and socially.
What has been the most challenging aspect of your apprenticeship, and how did you overcome it?
I’ve always been very introverted, so starting my first job, and going to my first day at university, both in new places with new people, were big challenges for me. But I just had to push myself out of my comfort zone, and it all ended up being nowhere near as scary as I thought!
How has the team at Pick Everard supported you during your apprenticeship?
The team has been great – I’ve always known who to approach if I had an issue, and any problem has been resolved quickly. Everyone has been incredibly welcoming and supportive, especially during my start at university, which they made much easier.
How do you see your apprenticeship shaping your future career?
As I mentioned, I’ve only been an apprentice for a few months, so my future career after my apprenticeship is quite far away at the moment, but
The idea that I’ll finish with a degree in Civil Engineering, and 5 years of extra experience actually working in my job, will certainly set me up well for my future career!
