National Apprenticeship Week 2025 - Callum Pell

10 Feb 2025

At Pick Everard, we’re committed to nurturing the next generation of industry professionals through our strong apprenticeship culture. Callum Pell, Architectural Assistant Part 2, discusses his hands-on experience, support, skills, confidence, and knowledge he has gained throughout his journey.

What drew you to Pick Everard for your apprenticeship?

There is a robust apprenticeship culture, where regular meetings foster a sense of community and support amongst apprentices. The practice takes a holistic approach to apprenticeships, going beyond the typical balance of work and study. For Pick Everard, apprenticeships are a dedicated pathway to nurturing early-career professionals, helping them develop into the best versions of themselves.

How has your apprenticeship helped you grow professionally and personally?

My apprenticeship has equipped me with valuable tools to enhance my understanding of professional practice, combining classroom learning with hands-on experience on live projects. This has expanded my skillset and knowledge, setting me up for the future. Additionally, it has helped me become more organised, as I’ve learned to effectively balance, work, study, and my social life.

What has been the most challenging aspect of your apprenticeship, and how did you overcome it?

The most challenging aspect of the apprenticeship has been managing workload. However, through careful planning and time management, I’ve been able to stay on top of things. For instance, I make use of my commute to reflect on key decisions for assignments and map out my schedule, ensuring I use my time efficiently.

How has the team at Pick Everard supported you during your apprenticeship?

My team has given me valuable opportunities to discuss my university projects, offering insightful advice when needed and providing access to the tools and resources available within the practice to support my studies.

What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship in this industry?

Ensure both you and your employer have a clear understanding of the apprenticeship requirements, and that your employer is fully committed to providing the time and support you need. Take full advantage of the opportunity to work and learn simultaneously, as it’s a great chance to gain valuable new skills that you can contribute to your team. Connect with others on your course to support each other along the way!
