Ahead of Armed Forces Day on the 29 June 2024, we sat down with our associate director and ex-military personnel, Jeff Hughes-Jones, to discuss how working in the Armed Forces shaped his future and how it's been transitioning into the civilian sector.
What is your role?
I am an Associate Director in the Construction Health & Safety (H&S) Team at Pick Everard. In this role, I oversee various projects, while providing expert guidance to our clients and project teams.
What attracted you to Pick Everard?
The comprehensive multi-disciplinary approach of Pick Everard greatly appealed to me. Additionally, during my interview process, the interviewers were very positive about my background in the Armed Forces. Even back in 2007, when I joined, the company's website prominently emphasised that their people were their greatest asset, which resonated with my values and aspirations.
What inspired you to pursue a career in Health and Safety?
My inspiration for a career in Health and Safety stems from my experience in a client and facilities management role, where I led construction projects on military bases. It was crucial to understand the health and safety aspects of our contractors' work, which naturally led me to this profession.
How did working for the Armed Forces shape your future?
Working in the Armed Forces provided a solid foundation for my future career. I completed my NEBOSH General Certificate at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus, which equipped me with essential knowledge and skills, setting the stage for my transition into a Health and Safety role in the civilian sector.
What was one of your key learnings from your time in the Armed Forces that has been instrumental throughout your working career?
A key lesson from my Armed Forces experience was the ability to work effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders, contractors, and end-users. This skill has been instrumental in navigating the complexities of construction projects and ensuring successful outcomes.
How did you maintain motivation and inspiration during your time in the Armed Forces?
Maintaining motivation and inspiration was relatively straightforward due to the clear and defined career path available to me. Excellent training opportunities, coupled with interesting – and occasionally less exciting – tours across the UK and worldwide, kept me engaged and focused.
What advice would you give to any service leaver looking for a role within the civilian job market?
For any service leaver transitioning to the civilian job market, I would advise starting your research as early as possible. Explore all available courses, funding options, and training providers. Attend Armed Forces career fairs to gain insights into the opportunities available and network with potential employers.
