Principal Health and Safety Consultant

Ahead of the British Forces Resettlement Services Careers Fair next week, Principal Health and Safety Consultant, David Rimmington explains what attracted him to Pick Everard and how working for the Armed Forces has shaped his future.

What is your role?

“I hold the role of Principal Health & Safety Consultant at Pick Everard, serving as the principal designer on a range of projects, both small and large. My primary responsibility is to systematically eliminate construction and building user risks throughout the entire project lifecycle.”

What attracted you to Pick Everard?

“What attracted me to Pick Everard was the opportunity for autonomy in my work, aligned values reflecting the culture of the Armed Forces, engaging projects, a welcoming environment with friendly colleagues, and a competitive salary and overall package.”

How did working for the Armed Forces shape your future?

“The experiences, qualifications, skills, personal qualities, and resilience acquired and honed during my military service, uniquely position me for success in civilian life. As well as professionalism being the underlying factor, I had gained many transferable skills such as communication skills, leadership and management, analytical and technical skills, organisational skills, and interpersonal skills. This is a great catch for any employer!”

How did you maintain motivation and inspiration through your time in the Armed Forces?

“Without a doubt, the Armed Forces have some of the most amazing people you could ever meet or aspire to be. The strong bonds created in austere environments, and inspiration drawn from effective leaders and mentors were instrumental in maintaining motivation. The sense of belonging, and sense of duty to commanding a fantastic team was more than enough to get you out of bed in the morning. You have an important role in contributing to a larger mission, and you won’t want to let your team down.”

What advice would you give to any service leaver looking for a role within the civilian job market?

“Initiate your networking efforts early on; remember, success often hinges on connections. It's not just about what you know but who you know.

Take heed of industry advice when selecting your courses to ensure they align with the most sought-after skills.

Seek out a mentor who has transitioned from the Armed Forces to civilian life; their insights can provide invaluable perspectives on real-world employment scenarios.

Be your confident self! YOU possess a wealth of untapped talent waiting to be unleashed. Be your authentic self and showcase your capabilities.”
