Being Pick Everard
David McGranaghan, Interior Designer

What inspired you to get into the profession and what do you enjoy most about it now?
The creativity is what mainly attracted me into the profession and as far as I can remember I have always had an interest in the architecture field. I have always been interested in the reuse and redesign of a building and found that interior architecture and design allowed me to explore this area.
I enjoy seeing how design is influenced though the latest trends and how that is applied to an interior space. The skills we possess through space planning, visualisation and specification can really help bring a project together. I also enjoy being able to add my own style to a project and how different every project and client can be.
Tell us about your career development at Pick Everard
I am an interior designer at Pick Everard based in the Derby office and joined the firm back in January 2020. Since starting I have had the chance to work on some interesting and exciting projects while learning how the team operates. I am really looking forward to being part of a new growing team and progressing my career within interior design and the firm.
What do you appreciate most about working at Pick Everard?
I was excited to start my career with the Interior Design team at Pick Everard, as I had been told about the vision moving forward and growing the team. The team I work alongside are supportive and helpful which is a brilliant feeling in a new team. The office has made me feel welcome and it is a friendly and creative environment to work in. The team has also been supportive of my career within the firm.
Tell us about your early career experiences
I have worked in a lot of areas within architecture and design throughout my career before joining the team at Pick Everard. I have designed retail spaces for one of the biggest retail brands across the U.K and Europe and I have also worked on a design for Selfridges. I have taught on the Interior Architecture course at Nottingham Trent University and I have also worked in the residential design sector, so I have a wide variety of experience within interior design which I am looking forward to sharing with clients. I am very interested in bringing the knowledge and experience I have learnt over the years to the interiors team at Pick Everard to create fantastic projects for our clients.
If you could work on any interiors project for any client in the world, who would it be and why?
There are so many projects along with clients I would love to work with, one would have been ‘Windermere Jetty Museum’ which was designed by London based Architectural practice Carmody Groarke. The location, use of materials both externally and internally and the connection of the water makes this project one of the ones I wish I had worked on. Another project for me would have been ‘The Ormeau Baths’ in Belfast which was originally used as a swimming pool until it closed. Last year it was re-devolved into a fun and vibrant co-working space, with private offices, meeting rooms and an event space. Throughout the colourful design you get a glimpse of what the space used to be and for me to see that connection between new and old is sometimes just as important as the design.
