24 Mar 2025
Tim Dashwood, Senior Heritage Building Surveyor, shares his journey into the industry, his passion for the historic built environment, and how Pick Everard is supporting his development in the heritage sector.
How has your experience been since joining Pick Everard / What attracted you to Pick Everard?
Pick Everard boasts an impressive portfolio of clients and projects in the Culture and Heritage Sector, including internationally important heritage sites. I was delighted to be offered the opportunity to join a talented team focussing on this sector, supported by a renowned multi-disciplinary practice.
What made you choose a career as a Senior Heritage Building Surveyor?
My career began with securing degree apprenticeship in Building Surveying, culminating in achieving MRICS in 2023. My experience to date has given me a broad experience across Building Surveying and Project Management, but my special interest of the historic built environment meant I increasingly focussed on projects in the sector. I have been fortunate to work on some challenging and iconic schemes which have prepared me for my current role.
What projects are you working on?
I am currently working on a high-profile residential conversion project in the heart of Marylebone, along with various other schemes requiring specialist heritage consultancy services. My work covers a full suite of professional services to designated and non-designated heritage assets, with each commission being completely bespoke.
How do you stay up to date with developments in heritage building surveying?
Pick Everard has a fantastic training and development programme which seeks to develop the knowledge of the team and keep up to date with latest developments, including attendance at training sessions and industry conferences. Outside of this, I regularly attend events run by Historic England, SPAB and IHBC.
What advice would you give to someone looking to progress/develop in their career?
Prioritise working for an organisation that supports you in your professional development, with a strong track record of developing its staff into the area you want to specialise in. Having access to a wide range of opportunities gives you the best chance of achieving professional accreditation and working on highly important schemes.
