Being Pick Everard: Natalia Neilson
26 Jun 2025
For International Women in Engineering Day, we’re spotlighting Senior Civil Engineer Natalia Neilson, who has been with Pick Everard for over 15 years. Natalia reflects on her journey from Poland to the UK, the importance of perseverance, and the role supportive teams play in building a lasting career in engineering.
Can you tell us about your role and how long have you been here?
I joined Pick Everard in 2007 as a CAD Technician after graduating from university in Poland. The initial years were challenging, especially as I had to quickly improve my English, but I always knew I could rely on the support of those around me. After a brief spell working for a contractor I rejoined Pick Everard, currently working as a Senior Civil Engineer in the IHT team and have worked with Pick Everard for over 15 years in total.
What inspired you to pursue a career in engineering, and how did that path lead you to Pick Everard?
I’ve always known I’d end up in engineering. My dad was a Mechanical Engineer, and both my mum and brother graduated from Wroclaw University of Science and Technology. After completing my degree in Environmental Engineering in Poland, I reached out to a colleague in Leicester. That connection led me to a recruitment agency and ultimately to an interview with Pick Everard, and eventually, I was offered a position.
What’s been your most defining experience as a woman in engineering, and how did you overcome any challenges?
One of the biggest challenges was adapting to a new country and fitting into a male-dominated environment, all while proving myself. Fortunately, I was lucky to have a fantastic team around me who supported me through all the highs and lows.
What needs to be done to make engineering more accessible and inclusive for women?
STEM career fairs are a fantastic way to reach more girls and show them that a career in engineering can be both exciting and enjoyable. I also talk about my work with my daughter, who’s already shown a strong interest in building and fixing things.
What advice would you give to young women considering a career in engineering?
Engineering is all about problem-solving, and we each bring a unique perspective. As women, we often approach challenges creatively, which can lead to great innovations. Trust your ideas, stay curious, and never forget that your voice matters.
