A new modern, flexible learning environment

Bedford Academy

Bedford Academy currently accommodates 1,100 students with a capacity of 8FE, is set to expand to 9FE to meet growing demand. The expansion, will increase the intake to 270 pupils per year, with completion required by September 2025. The design includes a two-storey L-shaped extension featuring 16 new classrooms and a flexible multi-purpose hall.

The building will utilise a steel frame and a suspended beam and block floor system, with folding partitions in classrooms to create adaptable learning spaces. This expansion will provide a modern, flexible environment to support the increased student population.

The project is currently midway through construction and progressing well. With the building now fully watertight and the first fix of M&E has begun.

The Project Management team has led the project, supported by Quantity Surveying, NEC Supervisor, and Principal Designer (CDM & PD BSA) services, working collaboratively with Bedford Borough Council and the contractor, ASHE Construction.

Construction on site began in late July, and the project initially encountered a significant challenge when ground obstructions/existing undocumented foundations were discovered. These were left behind when the original school was built years ago. Despite this setback, no other major issues have arisen so far, and the project has proceeded smoothly since overcoming this initial hurdle.

The project places a strong emphasis on involvement with the school ensuring that students are actively involved in construction process. A key highlight of this project so far, is the steel signing ceremony with students from each year group participated by signing a steel beam that is incorporated into the new building. This hands-on involvement allows students to leave a lasting mark on their school’s expansion, creating a sense of pride and ownership to the project.

Throughout the project, a close working relationship with the contractor, Ashe, has been maintained, ensuring that the construction process runs smoothly and that the vision of the school is achieved. This partnership is key to delivering the project on time and within budget, while maintaining the highest standards of quality and safety.
