A brand new sporting facility which will provide athletes with competition standard facilities has now opened at the University of South Wales (USW).
The state-of-the-art extension at the USW Sport Park, which is located near to the University’s Pontypridd Campus in Treforest, includes a range of modern sporting facilities including the very first full-size indoor 3G football pitch at a university in Wales – and one of only three at a UK university.
Pick Everard has delivered project and cost management services on the scheme, which completed in January 2018. The project was procured through the Scape Group National Framework.
Mike Petersen, director at Pick Everard’s Cardiff office, said:
“This brand new facility provides the very best in modern sporting facilities for the University and we are proud to have been involved in what is a very important project for USW.
“Pick Everard has extensive experience of delivering schemes within the higher education sector, so we understand the importance of high-quality facilities in attracting and retaining the very best students and staff to universities, and that is exactly what this new facility will promote at USW.”
A key feature of the brand new facility is an indoor full-size 3G football pitch, which meets both the FIFA standards for football and World Rugby standards. The Sport Park also includes a specialist centre for strength and conditioning, with 12 lifting platforms, changing rooms, teaching rooms, and offices. In total there will be an extra 9,500 sq ft of space.
Professor Julie Lydon, USW Vice-Chancellor, said:
“We are delighted that the First Minister was able to officially open this spectacular new facility, and see for himself the efforts USW is making to strengthen its reputation as one of the leading providers of sports courses in the UK.
“Our investment in this enhanced resource is an example of our belief in the importance of giving students first-hand experience and allowing them to be immersed in their subject – from both a practical and academic level.
“As the largest provider of football coaching degrees in Europe, being partner with 30 Premier League and English Football League clubs; having plans in place to work closely with the WRU on providing coaching and development qualifications; students providing football coaching in the USA, and further plans to support community initiatives and elite sport teams; this first-class facility will further strengthen USW’s reputation as a leader in sports education.”
The facility was built by Kier Construction and was designed by Atkins.
Victoria Brambini, Managing Director of Scape Procure, said:
“We are delighted to have seen Pick Everard taking a key role in delivering this new sporting facility, which will provide the University of South Wales with the latest technology to help its students and staff excel. With features such as the 3G football pitch built to governing body standards, the new infrastructure will help attract and inspire both current athletes and athletes of the future to the area, providing a positive economic boost to the local community.”
Pick Everard works with many major organisations within the Wales and South West region; these include blue chip organisations such as EDF Energy and National Grid, public sector bodies including South Wales Police, Cardiff, Swansea and Aberystwyth Universities, and contractors including Wilmott Dixon and Kier.
The firm employs more than 450 consultancy staff across the UK, providing a range of project, cost and design consultancy services. It has 11 UK offices.
Pick Everard is also part of Perfect Circle, a consortium comprising Pick Everard, Gleeds and AECOM and now holds the Scape Built Environment Consultancy (BECs) framework which commenced in 2016 as the successor to the expired Scape Project Management and Quantity Surveying framework.
