Mike Petersen, Director, attended the RICS Awards, Wales last week (1 May) and was delighted to pick up the Infrastructure award for the team’s work in creating new, modern sporting facilities at University of South Wales’ (USW) Pontypridd campus, Treforest.
It was a huge honour to attend the RICS Awards, Wales at the Exchange Building, Cardiff, alongside our project partners Kier and Atkins. We delivered project and cost management services for the significant extension to the Sport Park at USW, which has completely transformed the campus and the university’s sports offering for its 23,000 students.
The new Sport Park facilities includes the first, full-size, indoor 3G football pitch at a university in Wales – and is one of only three at a UK university. The pitch also meets both the FIFA standards for football and World Rugby standards.
The Sport Park also includes a specialist centre for strength and conditioning, with 12 lifting platforms, changing rooms, teaching rooms, and offices. In total, there is now an additional 9,500 sq ft of space. It really is the best in modern sporting facilities.
The judges said that ‘…the team behind the project…had created an outstanding project that, as well as providing excellent educational facilities for the university, connects students to the local workplace, promotes health & wellbeing, and puts Wales on the map via impressive international links with Europe, the US and Japan’.
We were incredibly pleased to have been shortlisted, so are very proud to have won, as the competition was incredibly stiff. I’d like to thank everyone involved in the project for their dedication and hard work in creating such a significant new building, which will be utilised by students, staff and the community for years to come.
