Provision of new classrooms and additional hall, storage and nursery space at neighbouring infant and junior schools within a spatially constrained residential area.

The Brief

Appointed to design and manage the expansion of both schools to provide classrooms and facilities to accommodate four forms of entry, we were faced with the combined challenge of limiting the impact of the development on the operational school buildings and surrounding residences.

Our Response

Working with the school stakeholders, we were able to develop design proposals focused on minimising loss of hard play space. A relocated classroom expansion at the junior school and a storied block at the infant school reduced the overall footprint of each building.

Sustainability was achieved through selection of building materials with low embodied carbon, sourced locally as far as possible to reduce emissions while boosting the local economy.

Key Facts

  • Achieved BREEAM Very Good and reduced carbon through use of locally sourced, sustainable construction materials.
  • Increased available play space by adapting design proposals in line with stakeholder requirements.
