The Rushmere shopping centre was suffering from a lack of investment since its original construction in the early 1970s and badly needed improvement. Pick Everard was commissioned by the client to design new builds, extensions, refurbishments and fit-outs.

The brief

The project involved reconfiguring the centre’s entrances and internal malls, creating new atriums, enhancing the exterior, providing an event space and improving signage and furniture. It also included a phased extension programme, with a new retail park alongside the original building providing 125,000ft2 of new sales space, stand-alone fast-food outlets and a petrol station.

Our response

Our multidisciplinary team worked closely with the developer and local authority from the start, ascertaining the aspirations of people the centre served, and using this as the basis of the overall concept.

Key facts

  • We’ve increased trading areas to a total of 404,000ft2.
  • Prime rental values have almost doubled.
  • Footfall has increased from 40,000 to 150,000 shoppers per week.
  • 20 years after the initial design for the first extension, we continue to create additional retail space in the heart of Craigavon.
