Pick Everard was commissioned to create a new two-storey indoor training, rehabilitation and recreational (TRR) hydrotherapy pool with changing rooms and ancillary facilities at RAF Honington in Suffolk. The pool plays an important role, supporting a population of 11,000 as a regional rehabilitation unit (RRU).

The brief

We were asked to design and deliver a new TRR hydrotherapy pool and supporting facilities at Honington. The client wanted them to have a minimum 60-year design life, comply with JSP 315 and have optimised through-life costs. They also wanted us to maintain their existing facility during the development, demolishing it once the new pool was complete.

Our response

We created a state-of-the-art facility designed to meet the demands of the 21st century. It embraces sustainable technologies and materials, including exposed structural glulam beams with insulated timber cassettes.

Key facts

  • We delivered a robust, contemporary 1450m2 facility over two floors.
  • We created a 25m, 6-lane hydrotherapy pool with filtration plant.
  • We completed all work on site within 12 months.
  • We achieved a successful DREAM assessment.
