Northampton College secured funding to fully redevelop their primary campus at Booth Lane and commissioned us to undertake the project.
The project required the redevelopment of the entire campus, while the College remained operational. The client wanted commercial-standard facilities with a BREEAM Excellent rating.
The development needed to include engineering workshops, art and music studios, science labs, IT suites, sports facilities, lecture theatres, a drama theatre, a learning resources centre, catering and hospitality facilities, a refectory and spaces for studying more academic subjects.
Ground levels dropped by a full storey across the site of the proposed building, so we incorporated this feature into our spatial planning at the concept stage, creating double-height workshop areas.
We developed an efficient, sustainable campus, with minimal energy consumption and maximum energy regeneration. We also carefully phased construction around existing buildings which had to remain operational.
- Phase 1 achieved BREEAM Excellent with funding for Very Good.
- Phase 1 also achieved a B rated Energy Performance Certificate.
- The scheme incorporated 12% renewable energy generation, with some technologies also used as teaching aids.
