The healthcare building is part of the £190m Featherstone 2 new-build category B prison and provides a high-quality environment for prisoners who need specialist medical attention. It offers in-patient, day care and out-patient facilities, including a full dispensing pharmacy and dentistry.
The brief included designing and developing accommodation over two storeys to reduce the overall footprint of the block, but maintaining the relationships between various departments. The in-patients department has 20 beds / cells including seven clinical cells. The remaining 13 cells comprise 12 standard cells with medical hatches.
At all stages we consulted closely with the client team, which included the Ministry of Justice, National Offender Management Service, Primary Care Trust, technical advisors and healthcare specialists. We were able to assist the client, influencing their aspirations to unlock the full potential of the building.
- The design concept, detail, quality of finishes and fit-out provides a high-quality built environment for staff and prisoners.
