Pick Everard was commissioned to provide design services for a new £7.2m research facility for Cranfield University. The TEC/IMEC building provides accommodation for research programmes including autonomous vehicle technology.
The new TEC/IMEC houses accommodation including: Vehicle Workshops for real-world scale autonomous vehicles; Mechatronics Laboratories; Augmented reality space for the study of multi-modal transport systems, allowing learners to interact with leading edge innovations in complete driverless/autonomous transport systems; Student Study/Social Space; Exhibition & Office space. The building is due to be operational early in 2017.
The client required a striking new building of approximately 2250m² acting as focal point at the junction of two important thoroughfares within the campus. The brief required us to design high quality, flexible research accommodation in a building that will enhance the overall campus masterplan. The cutting-edge nature of the research undertaken meant that flexibility of spaces to adapt to change is of critical importance.
We are delivering a striking three-storey building with a feature glazed control tower on a prominent corner position from where the motion of autonomous vehicles (from the ground floor workshops) may be observed.
- Working to a critical deadline and within a tight budget
- BREEAM excellent to be achieved
- EPC of A/B to be achieved
- Prominent campus location
- We are delivering the project at the heart of a busy campus and immediately adjacent to emergency access routes associated with the adjacent live airport.
