Through a number of small extensions to the existing school building, this project involved the expansion of a one-form-entry special educational needs (SEN) school for 63 pupils with behavioural, emotional and social difficulties.
The brief called for extensions directly off the existing school building. Our role was to ascertain potential elevations to extend without causing detrimental impact on the external hard and soft play areas.
We had to take a sensitive approach to internal remodelling to integrate the extensions into the main building. The work formed part of a standardised approach to SEN provision within the borough, based on government guidance.
We provided a design that complemented the existing school architecture and had a cohesive internal environment. This involved planning a layout conducive to teaching and management, and creating suitable and safe spaces for the children.
We also mitigated noise from nearby Heathrow Airport and addressed the challenging site logistics caused by trees within the site’s conservation area.
- We managed the project implementation while the school was active.
- We designed to stringent planning conditions in relation to the conservation area.
