Design chemistry on £3m laboratory project for Manchester University
A multi-disciplinary Pick Everard and Gleeds team has been appointed to design a new £3m synthetic chemistry laboratory refurbishment at Manchester University.
Founded in 1824, The University of Manchester is the biggest campus-based university in the UK and has one of the largest Schools of Chemistry in Europe. Having recently appointed a new professor in the field of synthetic organic chemistry, the project involves creating new teaching and research facilities within the existing Chemistry building. Works will be carried out between May and September 2012, ready for the start of the new academic year.
Appointed under the Government Procurement Service Management and Full Design Team Services Framework Agreement, a Pick Everard team will design and project manage construction of a large open plan synthetic laboratory with fume cupboards, bench space, supporting laboratory areas, offices and areas with AV facilities for meetings, presentations and academic use. Gleeds will provide cost management as part of the integrated Pick Everard team.
In line with the University’s target for reducing its carbon footprint, carbon savings will be achieved through design, construction and operation. The University is also signed up to the Waste & Resources Action Programme’s (WRAP) Halving Waste to Landfill Commitment, aiming to exceed WRAP’s requirements on all new buildings. The laboratory will be designed in a way that reduces waste, recycles more, and uses more recycled and recovered materials.
Pick Everard Partner Duncan Green said, “Our experience of educational buildings and on similarly technical projects at other universities and research units will be drawn upon in the design of this new facility It is an important project in the continuing delivery of world class research at Manchester University and we’re delighted to be involved. Having in-house specialists in sustainable technologies will be essential in achieving WRAP’s requirements and reducing the carbon outputs of these new facilities.”
Construction consultancy Pick Everard has an award-winning track record in designing educational buildings in the UK, for many universities including Keele, Nottingham, De Montfort, Glasgow and Strathclyde and is currently working on a new student residences project at Aberystwyth University, as well as major projects at Northampton, City of Bristol and Dudley Further Education Colleges.
