Testing winds provide a thrilling day’s sailing

Light winds created tricky conditions, producing skilled sailing in the 2011 Pick Everard Construction Industry Regatta on Rutland Water. Sixty contestants took part in a thrilling day, on Friday July 1, which has become an annual fixture, well attended by architectural and building firms from all over the country.

Organised and sponsored by architectural and engineering practice Pick Everard, the Construction Industry Regatta is now in its sixth year. Held every summer at Rutland Water Sailing Club, near Oakham, it is one of the biggest weekday events in the club’s calendar, when key players within the UK construction industry get the chance to hone their sailing skills against other leading firms.

A flotilla of 41 boats took part in three races, with the fixture open to all dinghies and multi-hulls with a Royal Yachting Association PY handicap. Participant firms included Arup, Bierrum International, Halcrow Yolles, Birse Civils, AECOM, Tangent Architects, Seabrook Developments, Mott McDonald, Barhale WSP, EA and Pick Everard.

Individual first place went to Simon Childs, of Morton and Lamberts A-Team, who sailed to victory in a Phantom racing dinghy. Second was Chris Roberts, of Morton and Lamberts B-Team, also in a Phantom. Third place went to Dan Willett and Pete Nicholson, in a Merlin Rocket.

Simon and Chris also took first and second place in the over-45s category, followed in third place by Daren Fasey and Colin Davis of the Vestas team.

The team event was won by Morton and Lamberts B-team, nudging the firm’s A-Team into third place, behind Team Seabrook Red in second place.

Regatta organiser at Pick Everard, Jonathan Adams, said the Regatta had provided an exacting test for competitors. “Flukey conditions meant everyone had to produce their best, which made it an exciting and very successful day’s sailing. The event goes from strength to strength, with valued support. We congratulate the winners and look forward to seeing them again next year.”
