High hopes and high winds at Fourth Annual Pick Everard Regatta

Strong winds added an extra dimension of excitement to this year’s Construction Industry Regatta, organised and sponsored by Pick Everard for a fourth consecutive year. A fleet of 36 boats battled it out in three separate races on Rutland Water’s choppy arena - made all the more difficult to navigate by unpredictable winds topping 4 on the Beaufort Scale.

Overall first place went to David Hayes and Sean Dwyer in their B14 dinghy, narrowly beating solo sailor Matt Aston, of Costain, in his Contender dinghy. It was a doubly successful day for Hayes, who also won the award for Best-Placed Over-45-year-old Helm. Third place went to C Chandler, who delivered a consistently solid performance in his International Canoe dinghy.

The event was organised by fellow contender Jonathan Adams, of Pick Everard, who finished 21st overall in his Laser dinghy. As in previous years, the event’s host was Rutland Water Sailing Club.

Jonathan said: “Competition was high and the atmosphere was great this year. The number of competitors was very good and we hope to see even more taking part next year. Any sailors in the industry should put a date in their diaries for July 3, 2009, now.”
