A specialist and unique brief from one of Britain’s oldest independent Muslim faith schools - Leicester Islamic Academy - for a new school, transforming a former industrial site. Pick Everard initially assisted with funding applications and The Department for Children, Schools and Families provided a £16.11million grant, with £1.79m raised by the local community. Pick Everard’s imaginative design combined the demands and customs of Islamic culture and its architectural principles with the latest building technology and sustainable construction methods. The designers maximised ecological efficiency and sustainability; reclaimed, crushed brick and concrete was used to fill the ground before construction started and wherever possible, recycled materials were used in construction. The school has achieved a “Very Good” Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) rating.
